Overview: This session will explore key aspects of equine welfare and suitability within RDA, aiming to foster discussion on practical, realistic improvements that groups can implement in their individual settings. The talk will cover fundamental welfare principles and key considerations for RDA horses, followed by an open discussion on how attendees can enhance their current practices.

  • What does good welfare mean for RDA horses?
  • The 5 Domains & the 3 Fs 
  • Saddle Fit considerations
  • Ridden behaviour as an indicator of welfare
  • Horse weight & horse/rider weight ratios
  • Management changes to improve quality of life
  • Suppling exercises: engaging riders, students, and clients in different interactions

Discussion & Engagement: This session will provide an opportunity for attendees to discuss how to make practical improvements in their own settings.
